Enomaly funder and CloudCamp father Reuven Cohen is putting CloudCamp where it belongs, up to The Clouds!

After 49 very succesful CloudCamp events world wide over the 5 continents, CloudCamp will be hosted for the first time on The Internet as a virtual Webinar.

Reuven Cohen just announced that Citrix will be sponsoring this virtual CloudCamp event.
Citrix actually donated 2 x 1000 users GotoWebinar accounts to empower the Virtual camps running on the cloud.

CloudCamp is a non profit organization, driven by volunteers and aimed to expand the knowledge about CloudComputing technology and help people to understand the powers and opportunities of this new computing paradigm.

CloudCamp is a really good event for those who want to do some networking and for getting in touch with the real "Cloud People" because it  has the power to attract developers, company owners, entrepreneurs and business angels alike to one common place with the common motive of Cloud Computing.

The first "CloudCamp on The Cloud", will be held in October. Cohen has put out a call for organizers who would be interested in helping planning  and managing this first virtual unconference.

What is IaaS? PDF Print E-mail
Infrastructure as a Service - IaaS
Written by Administrator

What is Infrastructure as a Service? (IaaS)

IaaS provides and mantains the underlying hardware, operating system and network Infrastructure resources and provides it in a virtualiced, easy to manage comoditized way.  IaaS doesn’t care about the application at all.

IaaS is the base of the Cloud Computing paradigm, many people confuse CC with IaaS, thers just use the term Cloud Computing  when they are in fact talking about IaaS. IaaS has also been referred to as "Everything as a Service" and "Hardware as a Service".

IaaS offers CPU, memory, storage, networking and security as a package. IaaS is the virtual machine in the sky.

With IaaS, you can choose from a range of predefined virtual machines and load packaged operating system images  to it.

Well known and whidely trusted IaaS providers that offer services to the general public are: Amazon, Joyent, GoGrid and FlexiScale and Rackspace Cloud.

Amazon is probably the best known of the providers, Joyent is also huge and hosts some Facebook applications and the the social network LinkedIn, among others.

By moving your infrastructure to "the cloud", you have the ability to scale as if you owned your own hardware and data center (which is not realistic with a traditional hosting provider) but you keep the upfront costs to a minimum.

The hey benefits of IaaS:

Ability to scale on demand, instantly.

Per Hour billing, you only pay for what you use.

Ideal for startup business, where one of the most difficult things to do is keep capital expenditures under control.

Build your own cloud

Cloud Computing (IaaS) has shown to have powerful capabilities and useful concepts that can be used at any datacenter bigger than just a handful of  fisical machines, it has brought a new paradigm with a higther level of virtualization and many new tools one can not live without after trying.

Many would say "It is not Cloud Computing if it's not on the cloud" and they're rigth but, who cares?

The fact is that you can enjoy the full power of Insfraestructure as a Service (IaaS) on your datacenter, may it be connected to the Internet (Hibryd Cloud) or just accesible inside your company (Private Cloud).

The case studies show that the bigger the datacenter, the most you benefit from Cloud Computing techniques and technology; that does not mean  there is no benefit for small datacenters. But don't take my word for it... You can try by yourself with little effort by testing any of these Cloud Management software solutions:

Nowadays, several Linux operating systems have some level of cloud computing embeded capabilities.

There are also many propietary solutions out there too, just ask google.

But there are also complete FOSS solutions that are nearly turnkey or need very litle effort to build a complete Open Cloud at your own datacenter:

Eucalyptus:

Eucalyptus is an open-source system for implementing on-premise private and hybrid clouds using the hardware and software infrastructure that is in place, without modification.

Eucalyptus adds capabilities such as end-user customization, self-service provisioning, and legacy application support to data center virtualization features, making IT customer service easier, more fully featured, and less expensive.

Enomaly:

Enomaly's Elastic Computing Platform (ECP) is a programmable virtual cloud infrastructure for small, medium and large businesses. ECP can help you design, deploy and manage virtual applications in the cloud and in the process significantly reduce administrative and systems workload. Our browser-based dashboard enables IT personnel to simply and efficiently plan deployments, automate VM scaling and load-balancing, and analyze, configure and optimize cloud capacity in an easy to use utility. We've designed the ECP platform to work alongside your current virtual data center, providing additional value and cost savings.

NOTES: Advanced features not included in the FOSS version.

Founded in 2004 and based Toronto, Canada.

Open Nebula:

OpenNebula is a Virtual Infrastructure Manager that orchestrates storage, network and virtualization technologies to enable the dynamic placement of multi-tier services (groups of interconnected virtual machines) on distributed infrastructures, combining both data center resources and remote cloud resources, according to allocation policies. OpenNebula provides internal and Cloud administration and user interfaces for the full management of the Cloud platform.

OpenNebula is an open and flexible tool that fits into existing data center environments to build any type of Cloud deployment. OpenNebula can be primarily used as a virtualization tool to manage your virtual infrastructure in the data-center or cluster, which is usually referred as Private Cloud. OpenNebula supports Hybrid Cloud to combine local infrastructure with public cloud-based infrastructure, enabling highly scalable hosting environments. OpenNebula also supports Public Clouds by providing Cloud interfaces to expose its functionality for virtual machine, storage and network management.

No commercial site, offers paid support and developement.

Open Source community: http://www.opennebula.org/doku.php?id=start

AbiCloud (from Abiquo):

Abicloud is an open source infrastructure software for the creation and integral management of Public & Private Clouds based on heterogeneous environments. The tool mainly offers users the capacity for scaling, management, automatic and immediate provision of servers, storage, networks, virtual network devices as well as applications.

NOTES: As September 5 2009 It stills in beta, not perfectly documented yet (Sep,5).

Platform: Java, either for Linux or Windows.

Offers other cloud products like AbiNtense and AbiData.

Definitions of Cloud Computing:

Tim O'Reilly: Cloud Computing is the big computer we are all collectively building.
Shrek: Cloud Computing is like onions... it has many layers.

-----------------------------

Delineating the cloud (if you dare;-) PDF Print E-mail

No matter if you work with hardware, you are on software development or into the virtualization businesses; at this moment we are all looking for the right definition for this "new thing" that is going on in the computing industry...
Being conscious of the blurry nature of clouds and its perpetually changing nature, it would probably not be a good idea to make hard coded definitions that could probably get biased, incomplete and quickly superseded by reality... But here we can try to find it out, you are invited to define the whole cloud idea, break it down to pieces, or make fine-grained clarifications...
Be welcome, and please help me finding out what Cloud Computing really is and how it will affect our lives.
You're all invited to "Delineating The Cloud" (if you dare;-).
